The Unfinished Letter is a body of work and a book by Providence based photographer Jasphy Yiran Zheng. The project is in honor of her mentor Ms. Huang who changed her life by giving her, an 8-year-old girl, an unreasonable amount of love and faith.
I was going through my old stuff covered by dust in my old house in Shenzhen, the city I was raised but no longer live. I came across some old letters from my primary school years, a few from my mentor Ms. Huang and one by me, unfinished. However, I forever lost the chance to send my letter out, since Ms. Huang no longer lives in the same world of mine.
It might be problematic to choose your own life path depending on other people’s words. It is very likely that this huge responsibility I am holding right now is created by my own imagination. But I do realize also, that it is my decision and my wish after all, to repeat this sentence in my head for as long time as possible, when she said to me: “You should be an artist, Yiran.”
